GLORY OF SUFFERING

Glory of suffering is not in rewards
but in increased capacity for understanding,
empathy, compassion, gratitude.
I realize when I see Ukrainian women and children
fleeing from their homes, their villages, their neighbors,
to avoid the misery of war --
destruction, ravaging bombings.
I remember my own fleeing to Maeng-Gol
and to Chong-Deok-Ni seventy years ago.
I feel the same pain and suffering,
fear and terror that stir in me to bring them close to my heart,
bring tears in my eyes.
My love flows for them, the mothers and grandmothers
in their babushkas and the baby they carry in their packs.
Oh, Lord, this is the reward, this is God's glory in me.
Dear Lord, help us all. Save us all, keep us all,
mothers and grandmothers,
babies and their little creatures, small and large.
Uncles and brothers running through hails
of bombs and bullets and shrapnel.
Dear Lord, hear our prayer! Amen.
