Anila Bukhari (Pakistan): "Secret Pain"

Secret Pain

I stand with them, crying silently.

Husbands return to their parents' homes,

Without a warm welcome, only ridicule, cold.

Why is this happening, my land, all over the world?

Why husbands forbid their wives, they refuse

A chance to see your relatives, so dear?

The girls are crying in front of me and oh they are suffering.

Husbands refuse to talk, share,

His brothers, on the phone, their love, intense.

What in the world, I ask, is this the hell?

Why do husbands force their wives to stay

In silence and hidden sadness.

Coping with violence, bullying and humiliation?

Their character is corrupt, their morality is low,

Ladies, you are special, it is time to prove yourself.

Stand up for yourself, by all means, .

Don’t be consumed by grief, come what may.

I am here, the voice of those who stand,

For elderly, sick parents, they are vigilant.

But they are eager to say their words without saying them,

To trust parents, to take care of them

The pain they go through, and the injury they endure,

Violence and abuse, too much.

Women, do not become strangers, but become rich, rare,

You don’t have to serve people, like slaves, unfairly.

Know your value, find your own way,

Free yourself from anger on this journey of life.

You are free, strong, and fiercely courageous,

Don’t be enslaved by public chains.

I stand with you, hand in hand,

Together we will regain the rights you are asking for.

You will never cry again, neither hear nor see,

Because you are the power that can change this situation.

Let us stand up, sisters, and make our voices heard.

Deep in this battle for equality.

Yes, I cry with those women, day and night,

We will fight together, with all our might.

For a world where women are taught and worshipped.

where it is recognized as valuable and fully restored.
